Suspect in Custody in Kidnapping Investigation

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced today that Karen S. Nichols a/k/a Karen S. Casper (DOB 06/09/1969) of 150 Hughey Lane in rural Anna was arrested on the evening of June 28, 2013 in connection with an ongoing kidnapping investigation.  Nichols was arrested at her residence by Union County Sheriff’s Deputies.  A minor child was also taken into protective custody at the time of the arrest and has since been reunited with his mother.  Nichols is currently being held on one (1) count of Aggravated Kidnapping and one (1) count of Armed Robbery, both Class X Felonies.  She is held at the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $500,000 bond.    Formal charges will be filed Monday morning.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police and Union County State’s Attorney’s Office continue to investigate after a Johnston City woman reported the kidnapping of her newborn child from a location in rural Union County during the evening hours of June 28, 2013.

The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office reminds the public that charges are not evidence of guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
