State’s Attorney Alerts Public Regarding Scam Targeting Seniors

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds is alerting the public regarding an ongoing scam which has been targeting seniors in Union County.  Individuals claiming affiliation with a home medical alert service have placed unsolicited telephone calls to Union County seniors.  The scammers claim that someone has paid for a home medical alert service and the senior need only pay for shipping.  The scammer then asks for credit card or banking account information.  The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office urges the public to guard against identity theft – do not disclose sensitive financial or identification information over the telephone unless you placed the call or you are sure of the company or individual you are speaking with.

Members of the public with questions or reporting suspicious activity may call the Union County State’s Attorney’s Office at 618-833-7216 or the Illinois Attorney General’s Office at 618-529-6400.  Information on protecting your identity is also available from the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov
